The World's Oldest Surgical Document

Edwin Smith Papyrus

Edwin Smith Papyrus

This ancient Egyptian document, written in hieroglyphics around 1600 BC, is the world's oldest surviving surgical text. It provides detailed descriptions of anatomical observations, examinations, diagnoses, treatments, and prognoses for 48 medical cases.

Recorded treatment methods include: suturing wounds with thread, preventing and treating infections with honey and moldy bread, stopping bleeding with raw meat, and immobilization techniques for head and spinal injuries.

This document, translated in 1930, fully demonstrates the excellence and practicality of ancient Egyptian medicine. The image shows columns 6 (right) and 7 (left) of the papyrus, discussing the treatment of facial trauma (cases 12-20).
